Staring At Reality In The Eyes

It is very convenient to not focus on our reality and live in a delusion. It is just as difficult to look at our reality in the eyes. Most people look away and hence prefer to be delusional.

If you look at yourself in the mirror for a long time, after a few seconds you know exactly what you want from your life because in that moment there’s just you, looking at yourself. Most people prefer to look away instantly because working on your realities is difficult and staying in a dreamy delusional world is a wonderful thing indeed.

The rising phenomena of intoxication, casual hookups and various ‘pleasures without conscience’ are due to our modern lifestyles. Most of us stay away from our families, sometimes even from our close friends. Those who have them near do not feel connected to them as such. Also in the modern world there is a speed expected from us. We watch more five minute videos and reels than longer videos because we seem to have no time. An accelerated life away from our close people results in a high amount of stress. To counter this stress we look out for short term pleasures. All of this seems okay only till you realise that it is not.

While some relaxation is never harmful yet indulging a lot in it is due to the fact that we are ignoring our realities. Studying is difficult, we prefer wasting time. Losing weight is difficult, we prefer eating junk. Spending time with someone in a quiet place is difficult, we prefer loud clubs. Improving the kind of person we are is difficult, so we prefer criticising someone else’s choices. All of this takes the attention from our own reality.

When we keep ignoring what is real and focus on the unreal distant world for a long time, we forget the difference between real and fake. People especially the younger lot assume that the world of social media is a real one. Social media gives them a break from having to deal with the problems of their lives.

Ignoring our realities is a temporary respite. The worst part is that having ignored your real world for a long time, when you come back to it, you see the time wasted in the process. You realise that there is no getting back any of the time that you lost. You feel hollow then.

My point is to stop mid way. When you just begin to feel that you are losing touch with your reality and focusing on a trivial dreamy delusional world, just grab yourself back. Get in touch with your friends, family and yourself. Put your eyes away from your phone and look at the world around you- stare at your reality and instead of feeling bad about what all is wrong with it, grab all that is positive around you and get going, making your reality better. Trust me, there is no other joy greater than making yourself and your life a little better than yesterday.
