Patriotism is an emotion magnified

Aap kehte the rone se na badlenge naseeb, umra bhar aapki is baat ne rone na diya.
~ Sudarshan Faakir

Above lines translate to “You used to say crying does not change destiny, hence, I could not cry in my whole life.” Recently, I was watching an interview of PV Sindhu where she said being quite an emotional person, she would look for kindness in her partner as a priority. This I found strange, because being an ardent Sindhu fan, I have watched her matches, and her intense aggression on the field seems in dichotomy with her kind and soft spoken aura outside the badminton court.

This brings us to the larger question- are emotional people found to be lesser successful than people who are low on emotions? The answer is a surprising no. In fact, emotions have played one of the most important roles in making people work harder.

While conversing with a friend who holds a degree in Psychology, I put forward this question- are emotions a hindrance to success? To this he replied that people who are found to be more emotional, put in more efforts in whatever they do because they have a sense of attachment with whatever they choose to do. This gives emotional people an advantage over people who are cold and distant.

We have seen people like Sachin Tendulkar crying, and visuals of football players and their fans crying over wins and losses are quite common. In the heightened events of our lives, we tend to cry, sometimes out of joy and sometimes out of despair. In the most intense of moments we show emotions of all sorts- rage, despair, euphoria, love and so much more. While doing tasks that matter, tasks that would take us closer to our goals, it seems we require heightened emotions. Thus the common parlance that emotional people are fools looses ground.

However it is true that not having control over our emotions costs us relationships, career, friends, money and so much more. Thus, a balance needs to be struck. Most importantly, we must learn how we use emotions and not the other way around. Not letting emotions use us while making it work for ourselves would definitely take us farther in life.
